I know that i would be able to make it through training. I think that i could be a good sniper. If women are allowed to join the army then they should be allowed to join infantry

They actually had a test/study done a couple years ago, where they had some women go through infantry school (they passed) and then they dropped them into a scenario in the middle of nowhere and did the same to some male infantry. It was about a squad worth of women, and men in this exercise. The two squads were not acting together, or in the same exact area. The women had to be evacuated or "picked up" after about 4 days. The men completed the exercise, I think it was like 10 days. Now I think there are a few (very few) women who could actually pull it off as real infantrymen, but it is just not gonna happen anytime soon.

I do believe that the hygiene issue is one of the main reasons. If an infantry unit is out in the field for months (more than 6) at a time (yes it is a possibility) what are the women going to do about their hygiene? There is only so much room for equipment, when in the field.

There was a case in the navy a few years ago where a carrier put out to sea for a 6 month tour, and a majority of the female sailors had to be flown back to the States, after a couple months at sea because they got pregnant AFTER the ship left port. That put their workload on all the other male and female sailors left behind. Remember ladies, just like all of us, there are those few who screw it up for the rest of us by quiting, breaking rules, or just being bad eggs.

I think some women should be allowed into all the job fields myself, but there are still Pentagon rules, and even society rules in this country that will prevent it. It is bad enough when a Male soldier gets killed and dragged through the streets like in Somalia, but can you imagine the backlash against our military if it had been a woman? The hippies and anti-military people would have a field day. Life is like that sometimes, but one day, maybe far away, I believe women will gain full access to the military.

I'd like to point out that that is a US military restriction, there are many militarys around the world that allow women in combat. Canada and Israel are 2 I can think of off hand. If you look at some of the stats from WW2 the russians had around 2000 female snipers with Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko being one of the top female snipers with Her total confirmed kills during World War II being 309, including 36 enemy snipers, The Finnish also had a number of female snipers in combat during The winter war and WW2.

If you really want a say as to having women in combat or combat related MOS's you need to talk to your congressman/person. It is national policy that no woman will be allowed in a unit that can be considered front lines. The definition of front line in the type of battle the USA is currently fighting is "Where ever the enemy is, IS the front line!" We have had several women killed in positions that were considered non-combat jobs, and I personally believe that as long as a woman can pull her own weight, and do the job assigned to her then any job should be allowed. I have served for almost 20 years and in 3 different branches of service, and several different types of job specialties. It has been my experience that most of the women I served with I would have been proud to have them in a fighting position with me, But Ive also seen the other side of the coin as well. A Slag, is still a slag no matter what sex they are. If the are in to "get a paycheck" and not earn one then they should stay at home and save the effort of having to bust them out of the service when they get stupid...
P. S. a slag is the metal left over after a weld is completed and has to be shaved off because its useless, and weak.

Technically, I think that if you meet the requirements, you should be allowed. And gender doesn't matter here.
Now there are psychological reasons that have to be taken into consideration. First, this would be likely to have an impact on male soldiers. I can't predict how they would behave under combat conditions. However, it would be more or less temporary - they'd get used to the fact in time.
Second - no offense meant here! - are you sure you wouldn't be suspectible to (hormonal-based) mood changes? One of my friends had formulated it as "I don't want to get bagged just because my squad NCO has this time of the month!".
I don't know, I'm not a woman.
On the other hand, when I was doing my military training, there were four girls in our group of 22, and they had received the very same qualifications and specialities as we did. Yes, we felt protective of them, and yes, we were ready to bloody the noses of any other soldeir who would have anything on "our" girls. But on the other hand, they had to face the same requirements, and carry their own loads.
I would trust them as I would trust any other of my unit mates.

Besides, there are women doing front-line duty already. I've seen a young leutenant commandeering a company of tank crews in my brigade some time ago (I'm reserve), and she wasn't any better (or worse) than a male officer...

I believe you should be allowed to as well. I don't want the toughest looking men on my squad, I want the best soldiers regardless of gender or sexual orientation for that matter. Besides that female soldiers noncombat MOSs don't shield them from battle...try being a truck driver or supply clerk driving from say anaconda to victory on route irish. One of the female cooks that was with my unit in Iraq has a purple heart.

My point is I want the soldier who can shoot move and communicate the best on the battlefield. Other nations do it with great success and eventually so will America, it is just that we are moving slower.

I'm torn on this one. Women are generally better shots then men, but less spatially adept. You probably wouldn't be able to make it through the training, I know I couldn't. You know they march you around a yard with all kinds of distractions then test you on where everything was (like candy wrappers and such). Call me a male chauvinist but I don't want a woman to be subjected to the hell that is war.

Heather, I think you should be allowed to be assigned to all units and MOS in the US Military.

And for those who say it's not allowed for a "number of reasons"... there is only ONE reason... it is Pentagon Policy.

I flew as a crewman in US Navy Helicopters from 1985-1999... I was there when females to crew in combat positions and serve aboard combat vessels. Two of my top Five pilots are female

Fine. But it won't belong until the protestors and hippies are calling the military barbarians for letting woman fight.
