I once read that it should cost the same as one month's salary.

This is a question, not an answer. Maybe I'm using the wrong forum, but the subject matter is appropriate to this particular topic, so here goes...I'm assuming that the standard "2 months" salary that keeps popping up in the answers refers to the cost of an engagement ring. I was hoping to learn more about wedding ring costs, but not many people have responded to that part of the question. So can anyone tell me how much I can expect to spend on a wedding band? Where and how can I find an inexpensive quality ring? I had one before, but it went missing, so I'm looking for an affordable replacement that is very close in appearance.

It really depends on your finances, and how much you are willing to spend on the person. A ring with big stones, or many of them can be cheap because the stone is not a pure color, or does not reflect light well. A ring with a small stone or none can be expensive because of materials or stone quality. That said you need to thing about how soon you want the wedding, and how much it is going to cost you. Do not go into debt to have a wedding as the first few years of marriage are often full of finances due to different spending habits. Also ask the person what they want. Perhaps a fancy or expensive ring is not what they want to wear everyday for the rest of thier life.

I got my engagement and wedding ring set at a Pawn Shop. It was only $450. I saw similar yet smaller ones at a jewelery store for like $2,000!! So, I would shop around, and no I don't believe there is a certain ammount you have to spend. I think it depends on you and what you can afford. Even if you can afford something expensive, I would go check Pawn Shops. You may find exactly what you want at a fraction of the cost.

Well, first of all you shouldn't be buying the ring, so let's hope you are asking this on behalf of your man.
There are these myths going around that it "should" be one or two or three months' salary, but that is totally false - it's just marketing hype by the jewellers and diamond companies.
Your fiance will buy a ring according to his finances, and what he can comfortably afford. Hopefully you realize the significance - the symbolism - of the ring, and aren't worried about the money/size.

You should spend whatever your budget allows you to without compromising the other important areas in life, i.e. electric, telephone, rent, food, etc. However, if your budget does'nt allow you to spend an appropriate amount to reflect the type of person who you plan to marry- meaning if she can't get beyond a bubble gum machine ring, then you might want to wait.
Anywhere between $1,000.00 to $5,000.00 is appropriate, if your finances permit. If they don't, don't allow $$ to stop you two- do what you can and then work towards a better ring in the future when $$$ permits! Good Luck.

I heard 2 months salary. However what matters is what the ring represents. My wedding band cost my husband $150.00 in 1970. I wear it every day and have since he put it on my finger 36 and 1/2 years ago. He is still the best man I have ever met and I love him more now than I would have thought possible 36 years ago.

"Experts" say 1-2 months salary. That's hype. Buy what you can afford.
And if you can't afford an engagement ring, that has no reflection on your love or relationship.
But I do advise purchasing a wedding ring.

there is no such thing as putting a price on a wedding/engagement set. you both sit down and figure out what you can afford. its not a competition between you and the whole world. this is between you and your finace, evenif it means just getting a pair of gold wedding bands. its not the fashion or cost that matters. what matters is the meaning behind those rings. you dont have to explain to anyone.

I wish all of you were right about 1-2 months salary. Unfortunately, I live in Las Vegas and the standard seems to be much higher here. All the radio stations and experts say 3 times your monthly salary. I think it depends on how much you make and where you live.

The ring sellers try to tell you 3 months salary..
If I was selling them I could say 3 years salary..
Live with in your means and if you get rich maybe on your 3rd marriage you won't have a limit
