Mechanical weathering is the changing of material such as rock without changing the chemical composition of the rock. When there is a space in a rock in which water can penetrate it, water settles in and then freezes during low temps. This ice then changes the physical appearance of the rock.

It gets in the cracks and when it freezes it will break the rock. Especially in very large rocks.
