Isaiah 58:13: If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words...

So the Sabbath is kept by not doing our own pleasures nor speaking words or thoughts that are not relevant from the Sabbath day. However it is kept by making it a enjoyable day, not a sad and mournful day. How is this possible?

Well, we can feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the fatherless. Pray for people. Spend time in nature contemplating the works of God. Jesus said that we are to do good on the Sabbath. Hence doing evil breaks the Sabbath:

Mark 3:4: And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.

It was also the custom of Jesus to go to church (synagogue) on the Sabbath and doing things in church:

Luke 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

The Sabbath can be broken by doing unnecessary work. We are given six days to work so that we don't have to do the work on the Sabbath. We are given a day to prepare for the Sabbath so that we won't have to do the washing and cleaning on the Sabbath.

Leviticus 23:3: Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.

Even when Jesus was on the cross his body was taken down before the Sabbath for burial:

John 19:31:The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Nicole is right. You have to specify which Sabbath. There is the Jewish Shabbat, which you can break doing any number or things, or the Xtian Sabbath, which you would break by doing something unholy or not taking the day in the right message.

In Matthew 12:9-14, Jesus says that it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. Therefore, doing anything other than that which is good on the Sabbath would break it.

as a christian... i think the only way you can break the sabbath day is if you do something unholy or something you know that is wrong. anything else really cant break the sabbath day.

It seems that for Christians there is no such thing as keeping or breaking the Sabbath.

Galatians 3:10-14 All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them." Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Galatians 4:9-11 But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.

Would a shepherd not rescue one of his sheep if it strayed from the flock (on the Sabbath)?

Jesus said something like that. Basically if you gotta do what you gotta do then do it. No regrets just because it was the Sabbath.

Work. Or rest.
