The length of Air Force deployments vary. My husband (he's a crew chief, though) did a year in Iraq, came home for 3 months and turned around and went back. He's only gone for 4 months this time. He's been gone as little as 30 days to as much as 12 months. He tells me it sucks. The weather is terrible (freeezing in the winter, sweltering in the summer), the tents aren't bad, the food is good. He works 12 hour days with NO days off. You get one 15 minute phone call per week (morale call) and there is e-mail access.

Yes, a unit that gets deployed, say a refueling squadron, still needs to do their daily paperwork, draw supplies, and all other support functions. Their support personnel like admin do go with them.

Oh yeah, even in the most remote forward operating base you still need paper pushers to make sure everyone has had their anthrax shots.
