They can live to be in their teens but feeding table scraps will have shortened his life because he has not had the right vitamins needed to keep him healthy.

Ah. The last statement tells me everything:
"it eats table scraps all the time"
It won't live very long like that. People food can be much higher in sodium, or nitrites (think bacon, ham or pepperoni here) and preservatives that those little canine and feline bodies just can't tolerate. It's hard on their kidneys, their livers (it ain't too great for ours either!), and you are literally shaving the months and years off this little guy by feeding him table scraps.
Diet is nearly everything! (I say nearly because there are congential problems or hereditary issues), but for sure and certain your dog won't live much beyond ten if you don't change what you're giving him today.
Contact your vet - get him on a good Science diet. Measure his intake if he needes to lose weight.....and he may be healthy and with you for alot longer. (Dogs lives average from 8 to 16 years, depending on the size of the dog.) Smaller dogs usually have longer life spans, unless they have uncontrolled diets like the one you describe.
Change out the table scraps for a piece or two of healthy dry dog food. He'll still be getting the attention and relating to you as before, but you won't be pumping in things that will cause him an early, if not slow and tortuous death.

about 13 years old but it really all depends on the pedigree and the specific dog.
