me and my boyfriend are thinking about getting married but my past credit history is making him nervous. we really want to get married but he has almost perfect credit and i have really really bad credit and a lot of debt from mistakes when i was younger. if we have a prenup saying that he is not liable for any of my debt will taht work to protect him? and will my credit effect his once we get married or is there a way to keep it seperate? does this only work in certain states/cases? i really want to marry him and i know its going to take me a while to pay off my debts, and i definatly dont want it to effect him since its not his responsibility. thanks!!!!!!

In all states, you are separate as to debt so your credit history won't affect his.
You will find a problem with things like buying a house, though. If you want to take title in both names then the mortgage lender will have to have you sign on the mortgage. The credit history will impact that.

Sorry Honey,
But when you marry someone you also marry their debt. Your best bet would be to look up ways to improve your credit score. Like a consoladation loan, or eventually getting another credit card and paying it every month to get a better credit rating.

he's not responsible for your past debt, but anything you jointly sign to, then he will be responsible.

state laws vary, but if he didn't sign to it, he is not responsible.

if you want to marry him you are and will be his responsibility. he could help you pay down debt if he wanted to.
