What is your definition of long? Adoption through foster care is faster than private adoption in most cases. You may not get a newborn baby though, so if that matters to you, keep it in mind. There is a lot of paperwork for foster care adoptions, plus a homestudy and criminal backgroud checks, but you have that with private adoption as well. Foster care adoption is the cheapest way to adopt, usually just a few hundred dollars, versus $20,000+ I have heard people paying for private adoptions.

A friend of mine has a foster home and she gets a lot of crack babies, and toddlers with severe behavior problems, so unless you are willing to deal with that it is not a good way to go. She also went to Russia and adopted a baby boy from an orphanage 3 years ago, abd he too has some learning problems because of the lack of care he received while in there.

It can be a long process, but you can do it.
I have friends who have done this, and found it to be very rewarding. You need to be sure and specify that you want to adopt so they give you kids who are potentially coming up for adoption.
