Modern civilization didn't start until the discovery of the use of iron. Until iron was discovered, especially the uses for it, and how to use it. man had mostly copper, or bronze to work with and being soft would blunt easily. Iron not only holds an edge better, but soil doesn't stick to it as much, therefore being good to make tools for farming. Iron, and therefore steel, being stronger and longer lasting make possible things we wouldn't have without it. From iron plows to bridge and building supports, to automobiles and other vehicles we would have very little technology without iron. Until, that is, aluminum became so cheap to make things out of, but iron and metals made from iron are still the foundation of what we have today.

disreguarding.alloys & compounds.........iron is the only metal that can be permentaily magnetized.......or can be attracted by magnetisum in general.......therefore very usefull in the production of many of the things people take for granted.[ie,electric motors,generators,compas,s.etc.] that is besides the fact of its a very hard metal & resistant to wear.
