i do have a tape loaded and rewound.the battery is charged,i dont know what a record lockout is,the lens is off, i get an image in the viewfinder,and it wont play previously recorded tapes

"InfoLithium" is Sony's name for its batteries, not its camcorders. Therefore, I have the feeling that you don't know much about the camcorder. Here's some tips:
1. Is the battery charged?
2. Do you have a tape loaded?
3. If a tape is loaded, it is rewound?
4. Is the tape's record lockout locked?
5. Is the lens cap off the lens?
6. Do you get an image in the viewfinder?
7. Will the camcorder playback a tape that has been previously recorded?
If you can supply the answers to these questions, I might be able to help you further.
