The TV started doing this at 6.00pm this evening. It will just shut fown after 10 mins and then comes back on about 5 mins later. Thought it was the remote changed batteries tried turning it on manually when this happens but it won't it is like something is overiding the on and off controls.

there are only two possible faults if we are talking a CRT television (glass screen) The first is just a dry joint with basically means where one on the components go through the circuit board it is soldered in the factory, after time the solder start to crack around the connection and the hotter the set gets the more the crack expands. Its very cheap to fix. The other is a components in the set, usually a capacitor. These are also cheap to replace, although there are not always signs which one it is. The normal tell tail sign is that the coloured shrink wrap that goes around the small metal can should seal part over the top of the can. as the can gets old and worn it expands pulling the top shrink wrap down. Other than that its a case of knowing where to look.

You sure you're not accidentally sitting on the remote?

Alternatively, does the remote have a sleep function? Sometimes my sleep function button is accidentally pressed so a certain set time later, the TV switches itself off.

Can't really explain why it's switching itself on again though, unless of course they've now invented a "snooze" function as well....like an alarm clock. Wouldn't that be great for cutting out adverts!!!

I think you might find that the tuner is on its way out. I had one that was doing that. It was a 9 year old Sanyo 27" stereo TV, tube type(analog).
It lasted for quite a while longer by using the tuner in my VCR to control everything. It's just a matter of setting up your remotes to operate the TV that way. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Try looking inside the plug top (if its not the enclosed type) and see that the cable connections are secure and tight.

Need MUCH more info.
The fact that it turns on again indicates that it's a thermal problem.
Has it got adequate ventilation?
