First you should receive a Free no-obligation consultation. This is where you are going to decide if this is the person for you or not. If they are an experienced and professional planner they will come to the table with some general personalized information. They will have lots of questions for you but will also do nothing but listen and absorb what it is that you want. The wedding is not about the planner it is about you. The planner is there to help you and do the little detail stuff as well as help you find quality vendors that are within your budget. They should have a vendor contact list that is people that they have worked with and recommend. And they should have low end to high end people.
The day of the wedding you should not have to worry about a thing and neither should anyone in your family. That is what the planner is there for. They are also a walking wedding encyclopedia.

First and foremost - a good wedding planner listens to his/her clients and follows through completely on their requests. No matter who is paying for the wedding planner's services, the bride and groom have final say on the arrangements because it is THEIR DAY!
Get referrals for past weddings/events he or she has planned and keep in mind that most but not all wedding planners offer a free initial consultation. If you are looking for a good wedding planner yourself, I suggest checking out the Association of Bridal Consultants website. They have a break down of state by state (and even in Canada) of Wedding Planners that belong to the Association. It's a professional group that has certain quality requirements to obtain membership so you're guaranteed to find someone professional, efficient and pleasant. Their website is:

1. someone who is experienced or dedicated if just starting, organized, and a good listener.
2. look at their portfolio, call their references and follow your gut. you must see eye to eye in your first consultation or it won't work, i'm not saying u will agree on everything, but u will feel comfortable in knowing he/she understands what your needs & expectations are.
3. don't use family, you want them to be a guest at your wedding, not working.
4. a good planner can absorb their fees in your budget by saving you $ with vendors in other areas, that is ideal!
5. compare their rates with others in your area
Good luck!

One that knows or agrees with your taste, and recommends you things you would like. It's mostly according to your taste and if the wedding planner has the same taste as you.
