Because it's on the equator (Ecuador is spanish for equator). There is a massive monument where the equator line is, it was built in the seventies i think. If you go there then have a look at the monument but then walk around 200m around to the side of it and you will find the real equator line in a very small museum. About 10 years ago they realised (with the help of GPS) that the original monument is about 200m off, it's quite funny really, they wont tell you about the real equator museum so you'll have to ask around to find it. They do experiments there to prove its the real equator line, its pretty damn cool!
