It doesn't hurt to start planning early, it might just save time later. Getting an idea of what flowers and colors you want could help, and save money maybe, because you have time to wait until things go on sale. (For favors, etc.) Booking a location etc really depends on how far in the future the location is booking. You could call and ask how far ahead they book. I know that the place I had my wedding at is booking for a year/year and a half in the future. Of course, you might want to let family know as soon as you have definitely decided a date. (especially family who might need to save for the expensive plane tickets and hotel)

The Knot.com was a really great site I used while planning my wedding.

Congratulations!! I would start checking into it now. Some places will give big discounts for bookings this far in advance. Just start checking things out and if you find a great deal on wedding items, you can always get it now and put it away until it's time. When you're rushing to get things last minute, you really can pay heavily for it. My husband and I were engaged for 2 1/2 years, I went to David's Bridal with my best friend and found the dress I wanted for $400.00, which was the sale price. I had about 10 months to the wedding, so I waited and kept looking for better deals on that style dress. I won the same exact dress on e-bay for $80 (including shipping!) less than a month later. He and I also saved up for our wedding and honeymoon for the entire time we were engaged and we were able to have a wonderful time and never even use the credit cards (and we both only would put as little as $20 a paycheck each away). It's a good start to your new life together not worrying about the bills you incurred during the wedding. There's also a website (and a magazine) called "The Knot" and you can customize a wedding planner for that has e-mail alerts, discounts and ideas....it made my planning a whole lot easier! One thing I can tell you is pick a maid/matron of honor who is up to the task, it's a grueling job and you'll need her to do it right!!! Good luck :)

I would start now with the major details. Like where in Hawaii would you like to get married at? What month and day will you like to get married on? What is a good season to have a wedding in Hawaii?
WHat place do you want a wedding at, chapel, outdoors, hotel??? Some places it takes a yr or more to get the spot reserved for the day you want. Also looking for the place, you get ideas of what kind of wedding you want and know what the prices are so you can save the money for the wedding.
What hotel are you thinking of staying for you and the guess, can you get a discount because you are bringing a group of people? Is the hotel available for that weekend to have your group stay there. What about a pastor? Do you have a pastor that you want to do your wedding in Hawaii? Does he have that weekend Available ? WHat about flowers? are you bringing our own flowers or are you going to find a place there that will provide flowers that you want? How much is it to buy flowers there? WHat kind of flowers bloom that time of year?

I hope this helps.

First of all, please remember to hit the spell-check before you post -- it makes it a lot easier for others to read and comprehend your question.

A large-scale, destination wedding such as the one that you are planning does require more planning than a traditional wedding. Because you are asking people to take off work/school for a week or more, instead of just an afternoon or a day, it is important that you let them know the itinerary as soon as possible. However, you have three years, and chances are, even in Hawaii, you won't be able to reserve anything that far out. Chill out for six months, or even a year, and then start doing some preliminary research. In the meantime, enjoy your engagement and focus on your coming MARRIAGE!

You could start planning anytime and wait to do the details until the date is within 8 months to a year. You could start scouting out reception halls, church requirements, and hotels now to get an idea of prices and options though, to get a rough idea. You could also start making decisions on decorations, if any, your dress, what flowers you'd like to carry, which flowers for guests (like mothers'/grandmothers' corsages, and boutonnieres for the guys, bouquets for attendants), and who you'd like to have in the wedding since you're keeping it so intimate. Destination weddings are more challenging to plan, so the extra time should be an asset to you! Possibly check with some of the resorts/hotels, they may have wedding coordinators that could help with the long-distance plans for little cost but fewer headaches! See what the resort/hotel could offer for decorations so they would be more convenient too, this could help with your planning decisions. You could also start picking out your dress and attendant attire - it takes a while to find what you really like! You also have time to research different areas of Hawaii to find the perfect place and see what the weather trends are to determine when in 2011 you really want to be married. Use the extra time, but begin planning the really big parts, like guest lists and get some kind of budget established so you know what you can afford and what different things will cost you.

It wouldn't hurt to investigate your options now. You can check with a travel agent or join AAA (you can get some pretty good discounts) and start looking at some places. You don't need to book anything now....just get some ideas.
I would also start some serious money saving... NOW. The generousity of flying family members to Hawaii plus putting them up in a hotel will not be cheap, even for just a few people.
Good Luck!

I started planning a year in advance. You have quite a while to go...I wouldn't do a whole lot until the date gets a little closer. Then fly out to where you want to get married and check everything out personally. Or hire a planner in the area where you want to be married. You've got plenty of time! Congrats!

YESTERDAY! It's never too early to start planning. Start buying little things here and there. Before you know it, it will be time to say "I DO", and you want to be ready.
