Because he is an older dog, i wouldn't recommend a shelter. But maybe try talking to animal rescue groups that will be able to put him in a foster home until he gets adopted. That way he won't have to stay in a cage all day. You can try to find a rescue by looking in the phone book, and also by going to petfinder.com. Type in your area and it will bring up different shelters and rescues. Try to find one that will place your dog into foster care. Good Luck, i am so sorry about your husband, and that you have to give up your friend.

Just because you are moving doesn't mean the dog can't go with you, does it? You've had this dog 12 years. You and your husband will miss him almost as much as he will miss you. A dog that old doesn't need a lot of exercise, he sleeps a lot and would be quiet. Please try to keep him with you. He doesn't have a lot of time left and if you abandoned him now, he would probably die from loneliness. Not only that, he is probably good therapy for your husband. Use that line if they won't let you have him at your new condo.

You can also try a local "no kill" shelter, or humane society in your area. This way you can keep track of it's status and if / when it is adopted.

It will be hard to adopt out because Labs don't have a lifespan much longer than its current years, and will probably begin getting arthritis or other health problems within the next couple of years. But don't give up - a good dog should never be euthanized before its time!

Go to http://freecycle.org/
it's a free email listing for those that are offering free things. Lets say you cleaned out your closet and realized you had clothing you'll not be wearing. You go to the listing and post it. Someone in your nearby area emails you back and you decide how to go about them picking it up.

You can also list things you need there as well.

When you get to the website, look at the lefthand side and find the section of U.S. that your in. Then find your area.
I've seen quite a few animals placed in good homes through this listing. Good luck.

after 12 years ( he doesn't have much longer to live) you should let him remain with you.. at 12 he no longer needs lots of exercise etc. i think it is extremely CRUEL and UNKIND to do this to an animal who has devoted his whole entire life to you.... if your dog was 5 or 6 that would be different ,,,, but, my god he is 12 he is your baby..... give him the dignity to stay with his family........ oooo i think i am gonna cry poor old dog....... mean owner

put out an ad for your dog. I would post them in your local pet store just because those people who seem them in there will be more likely to take better care of your dog. I would also instect the home of the person who you are giving your dog to to make sure that he/she will have room for your animal

Try to post your wonderful dog on craigslist.org. A lot of people have rehomed their animals this way.
