I think this is a good question (that's why I gave you a star). Ignorance is not a good thing and I don't believe someone can ever be "over-educated" when educated properly (there are many examples of people who were "over-educated" when taught false teachings).

In the sense of science, if truth is being taught, then education is in no way inherently bad, on the contrary, it is good and very important. But I think you'll agree when I say that a person can become narrow minded and even blinded by their current knowledge/beliefs, theists and non-theists. When current knowledge and belief cause us to reject new information, albeit valid, then our education and knowledge become a hindrance rather than a benefit. This applies to all areas of learning, be it a skill, a sport, a language, a job, etc.

Jacob, believed by many to be a prophet called of God, wrote, "O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not." (2 Ne 9:28)

Unfortunately, all too many Christians apply the belief that current education and knowledge can inhibit future understanding outwardly and fail to do so inwardly. A true Christian - and anyone for that matter - should accept all truth, 'come whence it may'.

Science helps create nuclear weapons, bombs, the laziness that T.V, the Internet, Microwaves, cars, and other human amenities bring about. Knowledge is a good thing and I can not lie and say I do not utilize these things but, I will admit that we did not have as many health problems when people did not have all these things may be this is why Noah and other people from biblical times lived for so long, and may be this is why God told Eve if she ate from the tree of knowledge she would surely die.

Knowledge is good for the good things it has help to create such as cancer treatment and others, but would we need these things if we did not have the knowledge and simply had God? Since knowledge is what causes us to doubt and causes many people to not have faith.

Well I think "over knowledge" can produce a great deal of ignorance for anything else, science, religion or otherwise. If I over educate myself religiously, Im going to miss a lot of whats going on elsewhere, which could be detrimental. Same with science, if you are too busy in youre education you might miss something else. We can become obssessed and overly confident and then lose the whole point from which we started.

I have a friend that is very intelligent, and can debate an issue until his face falls off. The only problem is that his views are very black & white, and they are all based on scientific evidence.

While this is fine most of the time, I get the feeling that he cannot form his OWN opinions about something without documented evidence to back it up. In short, it's almost as bad as people that continually quote scripture instead of weighing the facts and forming their own opinions.

Anything in excess is usually bad. Thinking for yourself takes more effort, but it solidifies who you are at the very core of your being.

There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance.

Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.

True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing.
Socrates

It is never dangerous to know too much, but it can be very dangerous to know too little. I think the above quotes pretty much sum things up...

No, I cannot and would not try to help you understand such a thing. Ignorance is not good. But then neither is placing your faith in man's knowledge above faith in God. God made this world and delights in our exploration and discovery of it. But when finite people stand on a finite planet and make deductions about an infinite God or their perceived absence of one, they are not being scientific.

Religion without Science is lame. Science without Religion is Blind. The only time knowledge is a bad thing is when it is misused.

Ignorance is not a good thing. Assuming that atheists are over educated is not a good thing. Assuming that Christians are undereducated is not a good thing.

Science might be the means of revealing that God exists by unlocking the mysteries of the universe-Christians should be encouraging scientific research not seeking to undermine it.
