Some of the answers in here are making me question why i serve in the army, but than i remember, there are more people out there whose opinion i truly value, like my family, friends and true patriots and those i serve with, my fellow soldiers, airmen, marines and sailors.
To the rest of you, i don't fight for you, so stop your false concern.

According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 33 percent of all homeless men are veterans, as is nearly one-fourth of the homeless population in general.
Here is a link to a web site where a woman interviewed several homeless vets. Maybe the interviews will give you some incite into why they chose to be homeless.

There are not as many that end up homeless as you suggest. However, many have post traumatic stress that is not being addressed by our government. Many ex-military use the VA to help them but our government is cutting funding to the VA. In our city we have a VA hospital that serves a wide area; most of NE Indiana, lower Michigan & western Ohio; yet they are trying to shut it down! They have cut funds that leave a lot ex-service people without the help they need. We owe these people more than this; they have put their lives on the line & now we turn away from them. Shame, Shame!

I understand what your saying, My brother left the army and struggled to get a house.
Technically he was homeless as the day he was supposed to be out of military housing, he had nowhere to live. It was 2 weeks later when he moved in his new house. Luckily his unit was on tour so they let him stay there for the 2 weeks .
Before getting out, you should really plan for this as you have 12 months from signing off to when your eventually out.

I have to agree and disagree with you, but your question why do they end up homeless, its because when you leave the service you have nothing, When I left i was told all my service would go towards points for a council flat, I was single at the time. when I left the council told me to talk a hike, i was not entitled to anything !!!! I had family i could stay with so was ok. But I can see why they get left on the heap, I think the Govt should look after service people when they leave.

Where do you get your statistics? Outta your hind parts? Do you enjoy looking stupid? Just because some bum on the street has a fatigue jacket with some patches doesn't make him a vet. It just make people like you look stupid believing they are a vet. Here in s.e. va there are thousands of ex-military and retired military. The few homeless in this area are not even close to being EX-military. The closest they got to being military is getting a hand out from some caring sailor.

When I left the RAF after over 20 years service I tried to get a council house. I was told no chance unless I was disabled, had children, came from overseas & was not British, a registered drug addict etc. I was even allowed to claim unemployment benefit or job seekers allowance. As usual with the British government they are not interested in upstanding loyal hardworking British subjects but they only help people that are criminals, junkies or some other form of low life parasite to the system.

Because the army does not train people in the art of becoming a civilian. being out of society for a long period of time and then thrown back into it, when you have no idea how it works because there are so many choices in the army decisions are made by one's superiors.

I believe the army are now starting schemes which will educate ex service members about how to integrate into civilian life again because frankly too many have topped themselves because Civy life can be so daunting when you only know how to look after your comrades in the closed army environment. People don't support each other in the way they do in the army, because we are not gonna get shot if we fall behind.

The army has to do a lot more for the people that have served in it!

It is difficult for many ex service personnel to fit into civilian society when they leave the forces. The forces is NOT just a job but a way of life. Add the problem of finding housing, not having a structured life etc into the mix & its not that hard to understand. It could almost be argued that services personnel become 'Institutionalised'. I am an ex army brat so I understand some of the problems they face

many veterans who have had experience of either actual combat (such as Iraq) or low intensity counter insurgency campaigns (such as Northern Ireland) return suffering from combat related PTSD. Since effective treatment for this condition is almost impossible to obtain many veterans become violent and depressed, and find they cannot adjust to life in a civilian environment, and henceforth they choose a life on the streets. many end up in prison, or dead/

I don't think a lot do, some have problems re-ajusting to life outside particularly if they have been in action, PTSD an all that. I have a year or so getting into civiy life when I drank more than I should but I settled down and got on with it.
