It is a tradition because you are entering the man's family. In today's world you can keep your maiden name, or if there are few men in your family, he can take your name.( I have seen it done). You can both hyphenate the names too. The choice is up to you and your significant other.

It's not important. Both can change names at the time when you apply for the license. He can take your name if he decides to.

It's not. You can keep your own name if you want or your husband can take YOUR name. In MD the couple can even make up an entirely new name or both can hypenate the last names.
