Not just a nightguard but a custom splint.
How does it stay on the teeth?
Can you still wear a hawley retainer if you are using one?

I have not worn a bite splint, but I make them all the time so I can answer your questions. The splint will fit on the roof of your mouth (usually) quite similar to your Hawley, but the plastic will extend over the biting surfaces of your teeth and then it will extend up onto the outer surfaces (cheek side) by about a millimeter or so. All of this "coverage" is enough to hold it in place. They generally snap into place.

You can not wear the bite splint while the Hawley is actually in your mouth. You just take out the Hawley and put the bite splint in. Since the fit of the bite splint is so good, it serves wonderfully as a retainer anyhow.

I wore a spliint for tmj for 18 months day and night could only take it out to brush. It stayed on with little metal clips that fit around one tooth on each side. I dont know what a hawley retainer is so I am not sure if you could wear on or not. I know that with the splint I had there would not have been room for anything else
