Not a single defeat - Not a single battle lost - 58,000 men died - But the military lost not a single battle. What happend ? Our Government is what happend - Our Government wanted our men to hold the line - be policemen - Capture hearts and minds - The Mcnamara Line - The division between North ans South Vietnam. Had we been allowed to truly go to war and fight like warriors - Vietnam would have been a completely different story. Our Government lost the war , but one can never say A Vietnam Vet lost anything.

Would the British have won in 1776 had they captured Washington in New York?
They would have won that part of the war.
We wanted our own gov and we were going to get it.
Human nature prevented the winning of the war. People want their own governments, not foriegn influences.
We won the battles, but lost the propoganda war with the people of Vietnam, thus the WAR.

Exactly. Out of Vietnam came the notion that the media can run around undermining the military and get away with it.
We have the NY Times publishing leaked classified information and going unpunished for it. FDR would have never tolerated this.
For those liberals who have not been taught history: FDR was president during WW2

Interesting.
The Germans had the same thing after the first world war. The right, especially Hitler's gang, came up with the "dolchstoss", the legend that the military had been stabbed in the back by the politicians, otherwise they would have won, of course.
It was not true then, and it is not true now. The fact is that military cannot win against guerillas who are supported by the people unless they are prepared to commit wholesale genocide.

You're right on the mark. It was the Liberals, and their media that made it look like we lost the war, and made it absolutely terrible on our soldiers when they got back home as well. Just like they're trying to do today. When at war, you can always count on the Libs, and their media to side with the enemy. Sad fact of history that tends to repeat it's self.

Oh, we clearly won. That's why Vietnam is a unified democratic nation. Those pictures of the last US personnel fleeing the embassy rooftop is doctored.

vietnam lost.. because its leaders gave up. these leaders control the country therefore creating the outcome.
germany only lost because hitler killed himself. this was because of one person. his death, one death, caused an entire country to comply to a treaty. it's the feeling of hopelessness amongst the feared germans that caused ww2 to end..
the germans, the general public, may not have wanted to give up but the leaders, those who represent what they believe is bst for the country, the sign that hitler himself gave up, signified defeat...
