as far as sound....they have an accent like everyone else said...every place has it's own accent. the main difference is that canadian english is influenced by England, not the USA. So, all of the spellings and such, follow the "British English" rules, whereas in the USA, we use "American English." for example, as someone else pointed out, instead of color, Canadians may say colour. or instead of theater, they may say theatre. that's basicallly it.

Mostly, but there are differences. And what is American English anyway? There are many different accents in the USA. There are several different accents in Canada, as well. Western Canadian English sounds more like Western American English than Southern American does. So, really, different regions of North America have different accents, and it's not separated by the Canadian/American border.

By the way, the pronunciation "uh-BOOT" is from the Atlantic provinces, not the majority of Canada.

The standard Canadian English accent sounds a lot more like a Northern US accent than it does anything else but there are differences and they are surprisingly persistent. If you sit in a bar in Niagara Falls NY and one in Niagara Falls Ontario and listen to conversation it is absolutely clear from the accents where you are and yet they might be separated by a distance measurable in hundreds of yards.

It's very close. Only a few words stick out in my mind.

"about" American: uh-BAWT. Canadian: uh-BOOT.
"sorry" American: SAH-ree. Canadian: SOR-ee.

"Eh?" is very Canadian, although it is used in some states that border Canada. Americans almost never say "toque" to refer to a hat.

To foreigners they are virtually indistinguishable! That's why Canadians wander about wearing maple leaves,as otherwise we wouldn't know!
