I have a six month old male chihuahua. This morning I noticed that his penis looked extremely red. At first I thought there was blood. However, at a closer glance it appears that this area is just sooo red that it looks like blood. He does not seem uncomfortable but I am concerned that it might be an infection. Could this be evidence of a urinary track infection?

Sounds more like irritation of some sort. UTI's usually cause frequent urination, yet not much come out. Sometimes blood will be visable in the urine. Take him to the vet to find out exactly what it is.

Symptoms of a UTI would be frequent urination and urinating in the house when they are potty trained. If you are concerned you can always just drop of a urine sample to your vet to get it checked out. Just make sure the sample is not more than 24 hours old, and keep it in the fridge until you can get it to the vet. ANd if you don't think it is a UTI, then just keep an eye on his penis, make sure it doesn't bug him, and make sure no other problems come up. My friend Ty who i work with has a male chihuahua that will lick and chew at his penis because of separetion anxiety, and other stressful situations. Is he licking and chewing at it excessivley?? I don't know of any other dogs besides Hooey that do this, but it may also be this. Good Luck, and i hope your puppy feels better!

It could be some kind of skin irritation. Usually a UTI will show up with increased frequency in urination, licking the genital area, blood in the urine, or pain (read: crying) while urinating. It may just be a skin irritation due to an allergy, infection, or some other sort of inflammation. Take him to the vet if this doesn't clear up in the next day.

The only way to tell if he has a UTI is to bring in a urine sample and have it checked.

You can do this without bringing the animal in. Simply collect a fresh urine the next time he goes and bring it into the vet within a few hours of taking it.

Collect the urine sample in a clean glass, transfer it to a clean lidded jar and bring in to the vet. Then they will test it and have the results, sometimes in a few hours if they do the testing in house.

do you mean that his PENIS itself is red?? it is supposed to be or do you mean that the sheath over it ( the part that is always visible) is red,, if so that is his skin and he could have a skin irritation... you won't often see the dogs actual penis it is up inside... but it is red!! put it this way,,, if what you are talking about has hair - it isn't his penis...

Call your vet and ask, and take the dog in if necessary.

Pets cannot tell people what's wrong with them ... so if you think someone's wrong, do your pet a favor and get him some medical attention.
