This A4 document each driver needs to provide to police (if I understand this correctly) but it is very inconvenient to carry that unhandy piece of paper ?

At home in the safe! It's too big to carry around with your license, I don't think it's a legal requirement to carry it with you when you drive, only the 'credit card' type license is needed, to show the local constabulary if they stop your car!

There is no legal requirement to carry your driving licence in the UK.

However, the Police can issue you with a "Producer" ie a requirement to produce all you car/driver documents at the Police Station of your choice within 7 days.

I keep my paper counterpart at home.

I keep mine next to the front door with the keys to a ford fiesta that has no mot or tax and is going to cost me 80 pounds for a scap man to take away. I`m sure if someone put their hand through the letterbox they could reach them and if I was looking in a different direction take the car but its not happend.YET!

I keep mine with the rest of my car documents in a folder at home so I know they are all together. If the police wants to see your documents you have seven days to produce the documents at the police station.

There is another number which could be the one you are looking for. It is in the very bottom left hand corner and also at the top right hand corner between D740 and Counterpoint Driving Licence. Mine starts with a letter followed by 7 numbers. There is another set of numbers at the very bottom right corner 5 numbers /10 numbers / 4 numbers

You keep it in a safe place at home. You will need this if you are required to present it to the police or for example to sit your driving test. Any points for infringements of the law will be identified on the counterpart of the licence.

I also keep all my stuff at home, I don't want the hastle of replacing it and as you usually have to take your insurance and mot in to the police station you might as well take the licence in as well.
