Qualifying for food stamps can actually be a complicated process and there are certain stipulations. In the state I live, you have to work at least 20 hours a week. Then they use some sort of formula to calculate your income and expenses and it has to meet a certain criteria. If this is something that you really want, I suggest speaking to a caseworker and have them explain to you why exactly you didn't qualify and what can you do to get them.

They probably can give you some assistance, if you are within the income guidelines. Assistance isn't just there for people who have children, though it may be easier for families to get assistance than for single people. You want to contact your local welfare office (if you give me your county and state, I can probably find that info for you), and see what they can do for you.
You can also contact local community agencies and churches (especially the Salvation Army) and you should get some direction towards food banks or cupboards where you should be able to get food for free.
A couple of other options are Share and Angel Food Ministries. With Share you pay $16, volunteer two hours of your time and you receive $30-40 worth of food. You have to be in the Delaware Valley for this one, though. Angel Food Ministries is available in 29 states across the country, so you may have better luck with them. You pay out $25 and receive about $50 worth of food (full menu).
Both of these organizations will aid single people and everyone is eligible. There are no income guidelines with either group. I've posted links below for both groups.
Good luck.
ETA: I have known people who had no children and still got food stamps, so it can happen.

~~~The welfare system is made to help familys and mothers with young children,,If you have no children,,,,then you should spend the time that you are not working looking for a full time job....or you can get two part time jobs.....I know good paying jobs with health insurance is hard to come by these days....just keep looking,,,,if you are truley in need of a lttle help just to get by for a few days,,,,sometimes local food kitchens will let you volunteer some time in exchange for a couple bags of groceries...or call your local church...but seriously,,,,if you dont have children ,,,take advantage of your time now and get a second job,,,,mabey take a few night classes at your local collage,,,that will help you get a better paying job.....
i think of it particularly is 18, or once you're on your guy or woman. If there are others residing on your spouse and little ones, their income could be calculated on your grant. you may state, in writing, which you have a "separate funds from others interior the dwelling house, and a separate element of the pantry/refrigerator in which you maintain your nutrition", subsequently confirming your economic independence from others interior the dwelling house. in case you do no longer volunteer this expertise, your clerk could circulate forward and technique your information in any different case. talk up. solid success.
Good luck. Go to college so you can one day have the earning potential to sustain yourself. Until then, call 211 from any phone( that's the # for first call for help), they can give phone numbers to food banks and other help.
Could you possibly get another part-time job? I know - it does stink that they will usually only help people that have children (or will help them more readily) Seems they are encouraging people to have children that they really can't afford in the first place to get financial help from the government.
Buy cereal and pancake mix. It depends on what you make. You have to try as hard for food stamps as you do to probably get another job. Everyone gets turned down for food stamps the first time. Keep trying. Stop buying baloney
