My breed suggestion would be boxers for sure!!! Pits tend to be more aggresive especially towards other dogs!!if you decide to get a pit please please please go through training classes ASAP so you know how to properly take care of them... but its a choice you need to research and decide on... not a choice for anyone else...dont forget if you get a pit you will have people that are against it and might have alot of issues with neighbors etc.. with a boxer that is less likely to happen...people are scared of pits because they are/were fighting dogs....
info on the breed:
FCI Official Name Boxer
Country of Origin: Germany
FCI Classification: Group 2 - Pinscher and Schnauzer - Molossoid breeds - Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs and other breeds; Molossoid breeds, mastiff type.
Utilization: Companion, Guard and Working Dog.
AKC Classification: Working Group
Personality: Intelligent, playful, fun-loving, even-tempered, affectionate, very devoted to its owner. The Boxer is weary of strangers and makes an excellent protection dog. When threatened, they exhibit fearless courage that would deter most intruders. They are highly adaptive to the home environment and will not claim all your spare time.
Size Category: Medium
Height: 21-25 inches at shoulders
Colors: Fawn or brindle : Fawn comes in various shades from light fawn to dark deer red but the most attractive shades are in the middle range (red fawn). Black mask. The brindle variety : fawn background of varying shades has dark or black stripes running parallel to ribs. Stripes must contrast distinctly to ground colour. White markings should not be discarded.
Average Litter Size: 6
Life Span: 10-12 years
Grooming Requirements: A quick brushing will be sufficient.
Shedding: Moderate
Social skills: Gets along with familiar dogs quite well, but can be aggressive toward strange dogs.
Suitability for Children: The well-bred Boxer is gentle, fun loving and patient with children. He may be wary of unfamiliar children.
Exercise Needs: Very high. The Boxer needs plenty of daily exercise (2 hours daily would be ideal for this high energy dog).
Train Ability: Easy to train but can be stubborn.
Health & Behavior Issues: Boxers are considered strong and sturdy dogs, but they suffer from several genetic diseases. The most common ailments are: lung cancer, skin allergies, joint problems, paw infections, sinus infections, hip dysplasia, gum tumors, and heart problems. It is strongly recommended to buy a Boxer puppy from a reputable breeder who takes good care of their puppies and provides a healthy living environment.
some facts I found about pitbulls:
Pitbulls are GENETICALLY bred to be aggressive, that means, taking aggressive dogs and breeding with other aggressive dogs. Even if you are not breeding for an aggressive dog, the dog will have genes which make its temperment aggressive.
This means that you can have puppies bred from very calm not aggressive parents that will still be aggressive. It will take years to breed aggression out of pitbulls. Do you get it?
They are simply aggressive, and even if you have one that was raised in a loving home, doted on, goes to obiedience, gets socialized, they still have those genes. They are basically time bombs waiting to go off. I stand by what I say. There is no reason on earth for ANYONE to be allowed to, or to want to for that matter, have and own a pit bull terrier. Especially when there are so many other breeds to choose from.
It is irresponsible to keep this dog breed and promote it. Breeders of these animals sell them and they have no idea what the people are like they are selling to.
I know you love your pitbulls, but you could have easily fallen in love with another breed.
Its for pure selfishness and macho image that these dogs are kept as pets.
PIT BULL FACTS
How dangerous are pit bulls?
Temperament: The American Temperament Testing Society evaluated 122 dog breeds and found that the American Staffordshire Terrier, a type of pit bull banned in Denver, passed its evaluations 83.3 percent of the time, just behind the golden retriever (83.6 percent).
Bite fatalities: The American Canine Foundation calculated rates of human dog-bite fatalities by breed, and it found that pit bulls bite at a lower rate than many other dogs. The Doberman pinscher was found to bite 10 times as often as a pit bull. Another study concluded that fatal attacks "represent a small proportion of dog bite injuries to humans, and therefore, should not be the primary factor driving public policy concerning dangerous dogs."
Most deaths: Pit bulls and Rottweilers have caused the most deaths, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United States, which examined 20 years of dog-bite data. Julie Gilchrist, a CDC doctor who researches dog bites, said many factors go into biting risk, including the health of the dog and how the animal was raised.

I personally would choose a boxer because that is what I have, but Pit-bulls can be great dogs if you get them from a breeder that you can see the mother and the father to know how the temperament will be like. Also in some places pit-bulls are illegal to have. Pit-bulls have got such a bad rep. nobody wants them. It all depends on how they are raised. I had one during my childhood and she was the best dog ever!! To keep from catching all the wrath from everyone I would choose a boxer!!!

I really love them both. They are both sweet animals if they have good owners. I personally like pit bulls a LITTLE bit better. And i dont really know why, i just do. But boxers are also one of my favorite breeds because they are so silly and happy. It is such a close call. I love all large, short coated, smushy faced dogs, and these two breeds have the best personalities.

A boxer is a much better breed. While they're a great watch dog, they don't tend to turn on family. My daughter was attacked by a friend's pit bull when she was about 9 years old. She was just standing in the yard, and it went up, and almost bit her nose off. When the older, teen aged boy tried to retrieve the dog, it turned on him. My daughter had to have her nose sewn back on... In court our lawyer proved that pit bulls are the most vicious dogs by nature. My daughter has another friend whom breeds boxers, and they are the most gentle dogs, but yet, protect their humans with their lives.

They could be. Depends on the parents really. Yes, it's a mix and a "mutt" but if both parents had good temperments, it's likely that the pups will too. If one of the parents was an *** ... The best dog I've ever owned when it came to trainability and being obedient was a pit mix. I'd own another in a second.

some people are so ignorant when it comes to pitts. i raise them and all my dog are very easy going.. you have to raise them right though. no fighting or getting to rough w/ people or other dogs... make sure they are around other humans, dogs, cats, kids,... you get what you put in with any dog. i like both boxers and pitts... good luck w/ your choice but remember that the horrible things people say about pitts are out of ingnorence and fear. people gave them a bad name not the breed itself...
ps the one that attacked the womans little girl, well im sure at some point that kid antaginized the dog, you have to watch that also. dogs are your children also so when someone bullies them they dont forget just like humans dont so keep your eye out for anyting like that so that you can right the wrong and the dog doesnt feel threatened in the future.

Don't believe everything you hear about pit bulls. They can both be wonderful family pets. It really depends on the temperment of their parents though. Never get a puppy from a breeder without seeing both parents. They should be friendly and trusting to people.
One thing I have to mention is it would be easier to have a boxer because they won't be discriminated against as much.

They both have different personalities, but a lot of that also has to do with how you raise them and train them.
If you're thinking of adopting a puppy or adult dog (please, PLEASE do not purchase from a pet store, as many of them are puppy mill dogs!!!!!), play with them a bit to see how you like their personalities. Then make sure you raise them right.
Check out akc.org to see their typical personality characteristics.
And PS - NO, PITBULLS ARE NOT EVIL!!!!! They are only evil when ignorant people train them to be that way. The reason why many drug dealers/etc. have pitbulls is because they're very loyal dogs and can be trained very easily. So bad people train them to only be loyal to them, and mean to everyone else. It's not the dog's fault.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?4196
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.
