My cousin died today. He was practically my brother/best friend. He loved skateboarding and surfing. I want to learn and follow his dream (my dream also). Should I say this now to my mother, or wait till this whole ordeal is over. The place I want to go to is in California (I live in Connecticut), how would I convince my family to let me go?

Give it time.

His dream may have changed when passed to you, I suggest that you skate the ramp/half pipe at FDR park (the one Bam Marg is seen at alot is his stupid show, but still the real deal) it is near the stadiums in Philadelphia near the interstate/expressway and surf the east coast. Try first beach in New Port, RI dead winter. Channel his spirit without going to the other coast. You fam should support this as both are pretty nice places. West Coast is a great movie set but the real grinders, the ones who do it for love not recognition, are wherever they are. You are East Coast, bring his dream where you are. Thats what he wants. Worst case Ocean City, MD for the waves but dont get caught up in that whole West coast bull.

Your parents should support you in everything you do, but skateboarding is such a weird decision to make when you have a parent. If you're about sixteen, and have pretty good grades, A's and B's, your parents may not be hesitant. If you have to bring up your grades, from C's and B's to A's and B's, you'r parents will know how responsible you are, and how determined you are.

I am so sorry for your loss. I don't think today is the day to discuss all of this with your mother. When I lost my son I couldn't even speak much less think about anything else at the time. I say think about it after all of this is over then calmly talk to your mother. How old are you??

give your family some time to deal with this pain. and by the way, its not an ordeal, it's death and sounds like you are focusing on your dream instead of dealing with your pain. you need to take some time to recover from your loss, and then think about it some more before you talk to your family. i am very sorry for your loss, my prayers are with you.

I would hold off, wait about a month or until you've worked through your grief. If you have a clearer head, your parents may be more open to it.

BTW, I've lived in CT, and I don't have a hard time imagining wanting to get out! ;-)

Good luck!

Tell your parents how mich you will miss him and talk with them about the dream you shared. You may have to wait to go to CA, but that will give you the time to prepare.

Give it some time and wait. Your family needs time as well as you. When you feel the time is right explain to them what you want.

give it a little time and then follow your dream. The family will need time to mourne before you announce your departure. They will be supportive if you time it right.
Good luck
