Your father, due to his age, should never undertake dieting without first getting a complete physical from his doctor. Also, the doctor will run tests to be sure that he doesn't have an undiagnosed health issue causing his weight. The doctor can also refer your dad to a dietitian or nutritionist who will design an eating plan for him based on the foods he really likes.

In the meantime, your dad can safely half all his meal portions...to eat only half of what he usually does at meals. If he is still hungry, he can fill in with fresh fruit or veggies with no butter added as most are healthy and very low in calories. He can also take walks. Why not walk with your dad? It would give him company, keep him motivated and benefit you at the same time! Also, your relationship to each other would form a closer bond. I would not recommend any stronger or more strenuous exercise, other than walking, without first having a complete physical.
