Wouldn't life be similar to life in the middle east? While the bible does promote love and peace, it also says that women should be subserviant and modest, that we should devote our lives to God, that followers of other religions should be destroyed, etc.

Your thoughts?

You are going way to far into it....
You have to realize that the bible..although devine in nature...was written by MAN. And it was written to inable men the ability to govern there populace. So they put what would help them govern the people into there bible and avoided the stories that would hinder the effort.
The thing is if you look at it right... THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED BY GOD... You will see there are really only two things you have to do....
see in the beginning there were over 600 laws or commandments that everyone would have to know and fallow... That was too hard for everyone... So God sent in Moses... He gave us only 10 comandments to follow. Still this was too hard to fallow.... So God this time sent us his son to give us just two laws or commandments to follow.
1. Love God above all else....
2. Love your neighbor above yourself.

It's just that simple.
other than that you dont have to go so deaply and litteraly into the bible... If you do you will be able to find anything you are looking for in it.

The Bible does NOT say that women are to be subservient. It says women should not usurp authority or teach a man. Woman can preach the gospel but not hold the office of a preacher. A wife is her husbands help meet (helper) not his servant. Whatever "version" of the Bible you are reading, it is not translated properly if that is what is says. Get a different version. Or, are you just paraphrasing what you have heard someone else say about the Bible. If we lived according to the Bible, life would be like it was for the disciples of Jesus. Look at the new testament for your examples as Jesus fulfilled the old testament by hanging on a cross, being buried, and rising again the third day. When he rose the third day, he sprinkled his blood on the alter in heaven as a LAST sacrifice for the remission of sins. Then he was seen of people that were still alive. He was flesh and bone, his blood is in heaven. Get the facts straight about the things you want to question. The thing about women adorning themselves in modest apparel if you read on also says, "but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works." The emphasis is on good works for godly women. "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection." Be honest. Don't most women talk to much or get hung up on something and cause friction? They are to bring up things they have issues with at home. If there is agreement that it should be addressed, the spouse or dad will bring it up or ask for the woman to be heard. As a woman, I know that if I am not totally leaning on God, I can be petty about things. That is our sinful nature. My husband IS the head of our house and he values my opinion on things but the decisions are his. It took me about 10 of our 16 years together to finally see that this is the BEST way and that is why it is in the Bible. I have been in church meetings that were hours long because someone, usually a woman, had to "beat a dead horse" as the saying goes. There are many scriptures telling how a man is to act. That an elder be a husband of one wife and have his children 'under control'. I have seen to many "elders" with unruley children. This is in direct disobedience to the scripture and is one of the many things wrong with the "church" today.

Just to correct above, it is in the New Testament that Paul says women should keep their heads covered and remain silent in church, not the Old Testament. The Bible was written by men living in very different times. They were just men with various motives, some good, some political, some sincere. They were not Gods and even if they were receiving divine revelation there is no indication that society was supposed to stop evolving there. The biggest failing of fundamentalism to me is that it puts so much emphasis on man written words in an ancient text.

Yes, this is where the Bible's writings came from, except that we do not live in a Middle Eastern culture in America at least, and we adapt certain things to our culture when they have little to do with salvation itself.

The "women in the ministry" issue has divided congregations based on strict biblical interpretation versus the tremendously increased status of women as opposed to that time period. There are many other issues, as you've indicated, that continue to divide churches based on how they interpret Scripture.

Short answer, since we don't live in New Testament times anymore, it's open season on the best way to interpret the Bible. Good luck.

Well, we wouldn't have drunkeness, violence, cheating, stealing, lying, or broken homes. No porn or drugs. And yes, women would dress modestly - good thing - and they would have to take second place to their husbands (not such a good thing).
It depends on which part of the bible you read - the old Testament or the New. Both advocate following the ten commandments.
Tell me, what do you think is the better life? A life free of crime, suspicion, and the misery caused by infidelity and drunkeness? I'd like a mixture of both - bit more respect for women and a more peaceful life for us all.

My thoughts? I think you should actually read the Bible and strive to understand what you're reading. Everything you stated (except about devoting are lives to God, which is EXACTLY what we're supposed to do) are things taken out of context of the actual meaning! The Apostle Paul talks about the woman's role in a marriage relationship as being submissive to her husband, but the husband as BIG TIME instructions as well. Jesus made women a huge part of His ministry. If you understand the entire context of the Bible, you see God's sovereignty and you understand His love and mercy! You also have to understand the role the Old and New Testament Covenants played in how God dealt with people! Thanks for the question, I would just encourage you to read the BIble yourself and really seek to understand it. Since we are under the New Testament law, The only enemy we have is Satan, Whom if we resist will flee from us (James 4:7)
Men and women are to dress modestly.
Men have their place in the worship service of God as do women. ( Women are forbidden by God to Usurp authority over the man DURING WORSHIP every first day of the week).
False doctrines and False teachers we are not to listen to nor obey any other gospel except what Jesus taught Galatians 1:8;
1 Timothy 6:3; 2 Timothy 14:3; Ephesians 4:13,14

Hebrews 9:27 For it is appointed unto man once to die, and afte this is the judgment.
Hebrews 11:6 But without Faith it is impossible to please him, for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them which diligently seek him.

The love and mercy thing is what Jesus taught and it did not involve destroying or harming those that do not believe. If we lived by the whole Bible, beginning middle AND end... things would definitely be different, but it should also be a lot more peaceful.

The total of the Bible has the New Testament, and surely does not teach that followers of other religions should be destroyed.

Women are to be submissive to their husbands, and the husbands are to think and act in love to their wives (not just I want to do this, so we are going to do this. He needs to be considerate to her wants and needs).

Modest do not mean a woman has to dress in Arab garb.

If we devote our lives to God, we will help our spouse, children, parents, friends, neighbors and every one else. How is that bad?
