I have studied, and/or been a part of many religious denominations, and have also studied the historical aspects of a great many religions, and have come to the following conclusions.
First and foremost, if you're referring to Christianity, an integral part of the christian dogma is that God has given us unabridged freewill in all that we do on Earth. Herein lies a contentious thing. Either the authors of the bible had freewill to liberally insert their own opinions or morals, and undoubtedly did, or the entire dogma of Christianity is false.
At one and the same time, I personally believe that the words of Christ himself remained basically uncorrupted. Read the four gospels and pay attention to ONLY what Christ himself said and did. You will find a being whose agenda was merely one of Love, Tolerance, and Brotherhood.
Oh, and particularly ignore the arrogant preachings of Paul. Historically known as a woman hating, boy raping, fanatical, epileptic, who had a grand maul seizure on the road to Damascus, hallucinated a meeting with the very target of his persecutions, and interpreted it as a Divine omen. If we all listened to Paul and his admonishment that God wants us all to abstain from sex, both Christianity, and it's followers would have disappeared from the Earth a very long time ago.

The bible isn't used to spread bigotry and hatred. Those who are offended at God's word are the ones who see it as bigotry and hatred because they refuse to accept the truth. Homosexuality is an abomination to God, but many want it to be accepted and seen as not being a sin. God says different.

Romans 1:26-32 - For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 - And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their ust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 - And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 - Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 - Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 - Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerceful: 32 - Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Many find the God's word offensive to them, and won't accept it as truth.

1 Peter 2:7, 8 - Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the buliders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 - And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

I think believers are simply quoting what is God's word and laws for our lives. Just as an attorney will refer to a law book when preparing for trial, or to prove a law that others may not be aware of.

So if you think Romans 1:18-29 for instance is a justification than all apologies it comes from the word that we live by.. We did not write it but it is what we believe, and the word of God. Just like I did not right the constitution, but I will invoke the rights stated in it when I need to.

Instead of looking outside themselves too many people try to create an image of God which is nothing more than a reflection of themselves and their pwn selfish desires.

I am not the first to say that men create God in their own image.

People who spread hate choose to believe in a God that approves of spreading hate and bend the meanings of holy scripture to the breaking point and beyond to justify their actions.

Hate and bigotry, no. But it is perfectly okay to use it to justify your religious opinions. For example, most Christians are completely against homosexuality, and a way to back it up is using the Bible for justification. I'm non-denominational Christian and I have no problem with gays.

Yes because homosexuality is wrong. If everyone was a homosexual then the world wouldn't work. Men and women were made for one another, and that is the only way to have children. The bible teaches this in the old & new testament.

It was Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.

To truly set the record straight, the bible does say it's an abomination to lie with the same sex. If it is taken wrong or as judging someone, that's because they don't want to acknowledge the truth.

Well, I would say that since God's will has basically transcended to "Man's will", I would say yes. The original God (if he is anything like the Sunday School God we learn about) wouldn't probably stand for it, and would speak up on the opposition of it, but because man has decided to be God's mouthpiece for some reason, that won't be happening.

People just do horrible things "in the name of God" to dull the sound of their conscience speaking up and saying "No."

I have to say it depends. If god really was how the Bible describes him, then yes he would like it. Afterall, he'd hate that too and they'd burn for it.
