Correct me if I am wrong, I thought that to be an atheist you have to not believe in the existence of God.

Since I think that there is a God, why do some geniuses call me an atheist? I guess we all have to have a label, it just really matter which label we are given.

You might be closer to agnosticism than to atheism.

Atheism is the disbelief in the existence of any deities. It is commonly defined as the denial of theism, amounting to the positive assertion that deities do not exist, or as the deliberate rejection of theism. However, others—including most atheistic philosophers and groups—define atheism as the simple absence of belief in deities (cf. nontheism), thereby designating many agnostics, and people who have never heard of gods, such as newborn children, as atheists as well. In recent years, some atheists have adopted the terms strong and weak atheism to clarify whether they consider their stance one of positive belief (strong atheism) or the mere absence of belief (weak atheism).

Agnosticism (from the Greek a, meaning "without" and gnosis, "knowledge", translating to unknowable) is the philosophical view that the truth value of certain claims—particularly theological claims regarding metaphysics, afterlife or the existence of God, god(s), or deities—is unknown or (possibly) inherently unknowable. Some agnostics take a stronger view that the concept of a deity is incoherent, thus meaningless and irrelevant to life[citation needed]. "Agnostic" was introduced by Thomas Henry Huxley in 1869 to describe his philosophy. The term agnostic is also used to describe those who are unconvinced or noncommittal about the existence of deities as well as about other matters of religion.

but hey, whatever makes you happy and the others around you not-miserable (preferably happy too) is fine by this atheist!

An atheist by definition is someone who says there is no God/god.
An agnostic is someone who says they don't know if there is a God/god.
I am someone who says He has a personal relationship with the Living God, having been born again by the power of the Holy Spirit through faith in the atoning blood of Jesus Christ. If I said I didn't know God, I would be a liar.

By definition, atheists do not believe in any god or gods. The word in Greek means "without god." However, it's certainly possible to not believe in whatever god or gods the people around you believe in. This does not make you an atheist, but it might make you unpopular.

No. An atheist is a person who does not believe in any form of a god, in any religion. As soon as you start believing in the mere possibilty of a higher power you become an agnostic.

etymology... the word means NO GOD or Without God. You are not an Atheist if you have a god.

Nope.

But you can be Theist and still understand that your freedom ends where other people's freedom starts, instead of thinking that your freedom ends where some biblical God tells you it ends.

From what I've seen of you, you are that kind of theist. Please stay that, because they are very very rare on this forum :)

You're right. Atheiest literally means a (without) theiest (belief in god)

What you are is: theist. You believe in a god. You MIGHT be a Deist. Thomas Jefferson was one. They believe that a god sorta wound things up like a clock and then walked off. Here's a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deism

Logically you can reasonably believe there is a higher power or creator as long as you don't start assigning it human characteristics like the Christians do.

YOU ARE THINKING AGNOSTIC

THEY THINK THERE IS A HIGHER BEING... LIEK A GOD, BUT NOT EXACTLY CHRISTIANITY OR ANY OTHER RELIGION...
