No virtual memory is also called the paging file and is on your hard drive. When the computer runs from the paging file it is a lot slower than when it runs from the RAM. Normally it should be set to 1.5 times the size of your disk. In example I just install 1 GB of RAM to my parent computer. They used to have 256 MB of RAM. I had to move the virtual memory up from 384 MB -768 MB to 1536 MB - 3072 MB.

No it doesn't,normally programs write to ram but if this is insufficient it will write to the harddisk-to the swapfile/virtual memory.
Since your disk is much slower than ram memory it will take more time.
Thus, getting more ram is not a bad idea but also not to much just because it would cost a lot.
Virtual memory should be set automatically, and if you have a second disk(hardware-not partition)you should disable virtual memory on your bootdisk and enable it on the other, for better speed.
Cheers

the main concern to stress approximately is the actuality which you purely have 256 MB of RAM*. the fee of procuring for a sparkling stick incredibly relies upon of the size and kind of RAM which you purchase. Going by using your laptop specs i'll assert which you would be able to purely run DDR**. Now DDR is particularly much less costly yet its no longer as effective as DDR2^. yet to enhance to 3/4 gig RAM is going to fee around $40 5. ('3/4 gig' this skill which you purchase a 512 MB RAM stick and setting up it alongside with your 256 MB preinstalled RAM.) *RAM- Random get right of entry to memory= the place your laptop shops and caches its non everlasting archives. *DDR- single channel RAM, solid for uncomplicated laptop apps. ^DDR2- twin channel RAM, terrific for best end applications. E.g. graphically in intensity gaming, PhotoShop, having diverse applications open at as quickly as.
