For flights, there are many websites (google search always helps) you can look at, one of the biggest, oldest, and most established is
http://www.statravel.co.uk
and another good one is AIrtreks.com - here you can map out your flight by clicking on the maps then the search engine will price it up for you:
http://www.airtreks.com/index.html
For insurance (medical, etc) look at this site:
http://www.worldnomads.com/index.aspx?gclid=CND73-fc74kCFQJPQgodTHM1KQ
Budget is kind of difficult... in many countries like Turkey, India, Vietnam, SW China, Thailand, you can get by on £500 to £600 (or less a month) but in other countries you will need a lot more...plus you need to factor in the cost of white water rafting, trekking trips etc.
For example, you may be able to stay in a hostel in Cuzco or Lima in Peru for only $10 USD a night, but the cost of trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Piccu will be quite a lot to add on to the months expenditure...
Once you arrive in a place, the biggest expenditure is somewhere safe and clean to sleep, so to check your costs for that, look at the prices on HostelWorld:
http://www.hostelworld.com
Take a look at these sites as well to get the most information on planning, budget, what to take, how much etc:
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/ - this is the grand daddy site!
http://www.travelindependent.info/...
http://www.onebag.com/
http://www.bootsnall.com/
http://www.gapyear.com/
http://www.thetravellerslounge.co.uk
You should ask on the Lonely Planet Thorntree, this is the biggest travllers forum on the web, with millions of registered members.
This is the link to the Gap Year and RTW Travel Branch ...
http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/categories.cfm?catid=58
Do your research, buy or borrow the guidebooks... get your budget sorted, get your flights, get your VISA's and medical shots...
... AND GO !!!
I hope that helps

That sounds great, its a good idea to have a break from education before you start work
go to your local travel agent
tell them you want to go round the world and they will tell you how to do that, and how much it will cost etc
or on some travel agents website for example Thomson
they have helplines and i am sure they will be happy to help you.
good luck and have a great time x

Are you in the UK? Try www.travelnation.co.uk. My brother used them in his gap year and they are very helpful in buying round the world tickets and they give advice about travelling etc.

Try trailfinders or flight centre rather than sta travel, as they made a mess of my frineds booking and her tickets did not arrive in time for the day she was meant to fly.
