My grandmother always called everyone in person and thanked them for gifts because it was more personal than a piece of paper. My in-laws insist that a thank-you card is the only right way to thank someone. I feel a in person thank you or a phone call is nicer. Which is more approprate?

Better in person or by phone, but if it's not convenient there's nothing wrong with a"thank you" card.

Miss Manners would say a Thank you card.
Calling is a great way and sometimes can be more personal.
If the Thank
If the "Thank you" is to your in-laws or a friend of their, send a "Thank you card."
But, if not, decide which would be more appreciated.
You can always call and say,"I was ogi going to send a card, but I thought a call would be more personal."
People understand.
But, people who you anow are particular about "doing things the r right way or because it is the right thing to do" then, just send them a card.
They will probably not appreciate what they are missing, anyway.

A Thank You card is the proper way. I get gifts from my customers, and always send a Thank You card for each and every one, that really tells the giver that you appreciate it, regardless of whether you like the gift or not. If you want to call also, great, but do not do that instead of the card.

It's a good idea to tahnk them with a crd also. Back then they would call or say thank you when they saw your or went to viist to say thanks. But teh in tradition now a days is better when you send a car. Just go to teh dollar store and a box of them is a dollar so it's not expensive and whenthey see you they just might thank you fro sending a card.

Birthdays and such, a phone call is fine. Major events like a wedding, confirmation, bar mitzvah or a baby requires a thank you card.

I think a card works fine. Some people might feel awkward with a phone call.

I would say a thank you card. Actually both would be really nice.

You can do both, but sending a thank you note is socially mandatory.
