Tilakam or Tilak or Pottu is a sacred mark worn on the fore head between the eyebrows.
Women use vermilion, kumkum in the form of a dot or even other shapes.
Men use sandal, sacred ash for tilak.
Apart from the religious reasons we can say that a tilak will distract anybody from looking direct into your eyes.It is not easy to hypnotise somebody wearing a tilak.
