or, are the coats they have for dogs - just for looks?

When going for a walk - no. If the dog has to spend hours out in the cold during the day, probably.

If the dog is being active, their own coat is enough (unless it is a hairless chihuahua or something like that). But if they are sitting in a doghouse during cold weather it is probably a good idea.

Labradors have very special coats that not only repel water but cold as well. With their harsh outer coat and soft undercoat they are excellent cold weather dogs (lower 48 cold). They're not a Husky though and should NOT be forced to live outside. Their coat will keep them reasonably warm as long as they are active and moving around. Long periods of inactivity in the cold would be very bad for them as they were bred to be inside dogs (hence their more compact size). You can watch your dog and if you see her shivering and cold, get her a coat. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. Labs are the best aren't they? A word of advice that if you take your Labradors boating, they should have life jackets on just like the rest of the crew. That way if they should fall and be knocked unconscious, you will not only be able to find them but also have handles to pull them out by.

I have a Golden Retriever mix that will NOT even step out the door if it is below 50 unless she has on a coat. Her hair is very thin and she will park herself in front of the coat closet & wait for me to get one of her coats.

She has a red hoodie, a quilted coat, a pleather bombers jacket (good if it is cold and drizzling), and 2 raincoats.

If a dog is living outside it has acclimated to the weather. If a dog lives inside and does not have a thick coat of its' own there is nothing wrong with putting a coat on it. I wear a coat when it is cold.

nope they dont need a coat....labrador retreivers were used in their early stages as water dogs that used to retreive shot down birds from ice cold water....their coat is water proof and gives them enough comfort in very chilly conditions.....u dont have to worry abt takin it out in the cold..however if ur dog is a very young pup it wudnt have developed the required resilience and hence wud feel cold outside and might start shivering..do not take it out in extremely cold conditions if its below 4 to 5 months...otherwise ur safe...they dont need a coat..cheerz

Labs are pretty thick coated and especially when they are moving around, they don't require a doggy coat.

Those coats are designed for animals such as greyhounds and whippets who have a very meagre coat which doesn't keep them warm in negative temperatures.

Generally no coat is needed. If its too cold for the dog, it will let you know. But unless it's extremely cold it shouldn't be a problem, especially while getting exercise.

i had a black lab once.love him to death.we lived in florida so he didn't need a coat.but if we live in the cold country i would probably treat him as my child and put a coat and doggie shoes on him.if he didn't like it i would take them off.
