There is no way to answer this question since we don't know for certain what animals feel. As humans, we would like to think that animals do love, but we can't know for sure.

We don't know-- actually, we don't know how or why humans fall in love, if you think about it.
Cats do develop attachments, both to people and to other animals. I believe they grieve, though perhaps not as obviously as do some animals.
A curious story about a stray cat that came to our house: he watched us and our other cats warily for some time, then all at once he spied one of our cats and rushed to the door, pawing as if he wanted in. When the door was opened, he rushed over to that cat and began washing its face. Our cat was upset and ran. I have wondered if the stray knew a cat that looked like ours and mistook our cat for his friend. I know they could not have been acquainted because our cat was solely indoors since we got him at 8 weeks old.
(And yes, the stray is now a part of our household, but he never won our cat over.)

Well do you fall in love with animals? Of course they do. That is why they get so attached to you.

That is unknown, but some behaviours exhibited by birds (species most often that pair bonds second to humans).
I don't think dogs who 'protect' female dogs are in love persay, but rather are giving a show of dominance and right to mate with her.

I'd like to think they do but in reality no one really knows if they fall in love like we do.

Some animals pair for life, so I suppose that could be interpreted as "love".

Yeah, my pit bull fell madly in love with a female springer spaniel. You should have seen it, his tongue was hanging out and he was going at it a mile a minute. If that ain't...what is?
