The stoic philosopher Epictetus (who presumably knew what real pain was, since he had been a slave) asked the same question in his typically pointed way. A loose paraphrase would be: If someone laid hold of you physically you would oppose it as a wrong perpetrated against you; therefore why do you let yourself be carried away by someone's insulting words and made miserable by them?

We don't "allow" it. It is a very natural part of the nature of the mind. Communication between one human and another is either positive and friendly, or negative and accusative or aggressive. The mind responds automatically in a certain way to each. What we can do is train ourselves to better control our reactions to these situations. When people make really supersensitive responses to what they perceive as an "attack" on them, bad things often happen - either to the person initiating the behaviour, or the person on the receiving end. Unfortunately a great many people are already suffering from such a negative self image, they either collapse, or strike back in an exaggerated way when confronted by what they believe is an "attack" on them - verbal or behavioural. They can't see through the fog of their own self-denigration, and they will probably always be that way, because before you can overcome a thing and heal yourself from it, you first have to be able to see that you are suffering from it. It's kind of like emotional anorexia You are the only one who doesn't see how thin you are, and how badly you are in need of help.. Some do, of course, but most do not.

Our pride causes us anger and pain over the words of others. We care what others think of us. And caring is a good thing. It is better to be hurt than to have a calloused heart.

Mere words can make your day, make you smile, make you laugh or feel good about yourself. Mere words can also cut you deeper than any scalpel, hurt you and cause you to feel pain and even anger. Why? Because we "feel", because we love, because we sometimes let ourselves be venerable with someone we trust and then they say things that cause a deep wound inside of us. Making us wish we had never let them in. But. . .if you never let anyone in, then you would not "feel" happiness nor would you love. To me it is worth the cost of a few ignorant peoples words to be allowed to feel.

Because all words have meanings... and words can affect feelings.
If someone says to you "I love you" ~ that would leave you with a positive feeling. Same goes the other way... If someone says "I hate you" ~ that leaves you with a negative feeling.

The word of God is supposed to be used to correct and convict. I don't know what statement you are referring to, but I assume it wasn't nice.
