Many, but definitely not all, theists respond angrily when people question their beliefs. Sometimes the person isn't asking a real question, rather they're trying to ridicule someone's belief. (On the other hand, many times theists attack the person even if the question just seeks understanding.) People respond with, "You should respect others' views."

However, why should we respect views that aren't based on anything but blind "faith?"
I have no reason or desire to respect--whether this relates to religion, politics, etc --a view based on blind faith. Why should I respect the view that it's possible for virgins to give birth to supernatural beings? I can't even respect a person agreeing w/ me if they do so based on blind faith. Do we have to respect every view, no matter how incredible, just because someone chose to believe it?

And if so, I choose to believe everyone who disagrees are evil sinners, please respect that.

Jonathan:You don't have to respect atheism if the view is based on blind faith. However, if someone is an atheist because they choose to not believe in irrational things, then that is totally rational AND it's the default choice. If you can't understand the difference b/t rational thought and irrational beliefs, then the question is lost on you.

Fish: no difference; it's an irrational belief. "Studying for a lifetime" is the same as believing something based on blind faith because that's all there is. There is nothing based in reality, so why should I respect this? One can never come to a supernatural conclusion if they think logically, based on facts within reality.

i believe respect has to be earned. i don't think that pretending to believe in magic, and that people that don't agree with you are going to burn in hell for all eternity, deserves any respect.

We need to respect religious views because if we actually did respect other religious views, half the human conflicts in world history could have been avoided.

Respect arises from knowledge of the other faiths, presented in an objective light. Unfortunately, a lot of information about other faiths is never truly objective, and this ultimately needs to change.

As far as I'm concerned, every faith is a different path that leads to the same goal, so why can't we understand that and live together in peace?

People of "faith" are merely harmless comedies until they enter public life. Because they have a conviction that they're correct, all opposing views, that, unlike theirs, offers evidence, are simply dismissed. That's why so many highly public fundamentalists take positions that would not only be familiar, but quite comfortable to most fascists.

For God so loved the World He gave His only begotten Son, that who so ever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. I could give a ratsass what you respect, I would however like to see you change your mind and accept Jesus as your personal savior before you spend eternity frying in Hell.

When they stop trying to create policy based on an invisible man...When they stop getting tax exempt status based on an invisible man...When they stop walking up to people (all over the globe) and try to convince them of the existence of the invisible man...When they stop flying airplanes into buildings to be with the invisible man..When they stop murdering for the invisible man...When they stop calling people blasphemers for asking question about the existence of the invisible man...When they stop science and research for the benefit of visible man because they are told to by the invisible man...When they stop telling people who they can love and not love because of the invisible man...FOR STARTERS!!!

Those who answer with blind faith and those who study a lifetime and answer the same, are disregarded by you. So what's the difference.
