i had the exact opposite situation with a friends computer the other day. it started when he tried to install Media Player 10 and the license authenticity check failed. i heard rumors about this kind of things happen before, but your case would be only the second one i actually know of, if it is one after all. to repair my friends comp, i had to load the activation code change tool... or something like that... and provide the system with a valid code. yes, he actually bought one.
