Pitch is caused by resonance, and for wind instruments, that is the resonance of an air column. In that case, the more "space" there is (the bigger the column) the LOWER the pitch. A high pitch is produced by reducing the space in which (air) particles can vibrate. You can see this by noting the size of various instruments. High pitched instruments like the flute and piccolo are small, and low pitched instruments like the trombone and tuba are large. The reason for this is that resonance is caused by waves reflecting back and forth in the column. The speed of the wave is the same for all, so the longer the column, the longer it takes for the reflections to go from one end to the other. The longer time means that the period (time between waves) is long, and the frequency (no of waves per second) is lower.
