Isaiah 49:16 "See, I have engraved you on the palm of My hand."
I think that this is probably at the origin of this phrase. The people of Israel were protected and at the same time constantly brought to mind.

Well, it obviously means where you can see the object clearly, as you would if it was indeed "in the palm of your hand".

it comes from the way we used to give abuse to mammys boys who never left their mums side, we'd say you still going out with Palm-e-a, palmea who he'd say, Palm-of the -hand
