Usually it is a sign of poor circulation. If it is you with this condition you need to see a doctor. If it is a very old person this could be normal, and their doctor probably has already observed this.

the nail bed often becomes purple due to poor circulation and when your hands are cold. I have never heard of it being related to a vitamin deficiency. If your nail beds are purple ALL the time, it is time to see a doctor to get it checked out.

Purple or black: Usually due to trauma, or may also be a sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. A brown or black streak that begins at the base of the nail and extends to its tip could be a diagnostic clue to a potentially dangerous melanoma. See your healthcare provider.
