At the first sign of a cold, drink lots of liquids. I take a few doses of echinacea over the next few days (I use this cautiously since this herb stimulates the immune system). I take lots of vitamin C, and even if it is old-fashioned I make a big pot of chicken stock from scratch.
~Simmering the chicken to make the stock humidifies the house, the aroma of the herbs is great~ if you can smell it, the herbs themselves are medicinal (thyme is a natural decongestant, peppercorn always helps me decongest as well, and parsley is an excellant source of vitamin C. I also add a bay leaf or three, a large onion, and some salt. I don't add carrot since I don't like the stock to be sweet, and carrots contain a lot of sugar.). There will always be a small amount of fat in the stock, which helps soothe the throat. Also, this gives me something simple to eat, so that I get nutrition.
Following this battle plan, I have headed off colds for my family, friends, and myself (reducing sniffle time for one member from his usual weeks to about a day and a half).
~I recommend that you research any supplements, since even herbs can have side-effects. A good source for information about natural healing:

At the first sign of a cold, take zinc lozenges. They shorten the duration of a cold (at least for me) by several days. But you have to take it at the first signs or it won't work. My daughter takes airborne, and that works for her. Drink a lot of green tea, and plenty of chicken soup. It won't "cure", but it does help and does shorten the number of days by several.

If you can take zinc and vitamin C immediately with first symptoms it can either stop it from developing fully or make it more bearable.
