The best way to handle this is to have fun with it. Maybe it will work out, maybe not but at least you'll of had fun.

First you have to define the term "relationship". If you and this person have talked over a long period of time and feel that you have enough in common that you want to meet and see if it blooms into a real relationship, then by all means, do that. If, however, the distance or your ages make meeting an impossibility, then accept that at face value and don't deceive yourself into making it more than it can ever be. Enjoy the conversations you have, and make a friend first. Sometimes the "face to face" meet tells you that the person is not the same as the person you thought you knew, and that may be true about you, too. Be realistic, but remember that some of these relationships really do result in long term situations.
