They're talking about the moon.
Gen 1-2 is written in the style of Hebrew poetry (I'm doing a postgrad in theology at an evangelical college at Oxford Uni and we have to study Hebrew) - they didn't realise that the moon isn't a light in itself but the point is that all the things that the nations around them worshipped ... and they go through the local Gods in order of power - light, darkness, the sun, moon/stars, animals etc - The point of the poem is that Yahweh made them all so is above each of them.

Hope this helps

It's the sunlight that the moon reflects, though of course the Biblical writers did not know that. And they apparently never noticed that the moon is sometimes visible during daylight, and sometimes not visible at night.

There is profound symbolism at work here|

The *greater light* represents *Jesus Christ* in His humanity (for the humanity of the Word is a *created* reality).

The *lesser light* represents the *Blessed Virgin,* who guides us in the night of faith, as we are still pilgrims in this world, on our way to our homeland in heaven|

When we reach the *day* of eternal life, Jesus Christ will be our *Sun* and our *Joy* in the *Beatific Vision* of seeing God face to face for all eternity|

Well everybody is going with "the moon" but I say it's a prophecy! God was predicting flashlights! See how marvelous His word is?
