I've heard from different sources that Shia law has been used both to justify women's rights to voting and education and to justify denying women access to voting and education.

It has been called both merciful because to prove a sex crime, you must have 3 eye witnesses, and cruel, because sex crimes carry a death penalty.

Is Shia law interpreted in such different ways that the term has essentially become almost meaningless? Is there some core that is true no matter where Shia is practiced?

Forgive my mis-typing. I was reading from another reader and I simply had a brain cramp I know it's not "Shia" law, but instead "Sharia." (I am truly embarassed.)

Shariah Law is the Law of God which He himself decreed. Human standards may change but God's will never. The problem is only on its interpretation and execution for proper implementation means justice while its misinterpretation and improper execution would result in disaster. The safe and true path is to be moderate as the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded.

God alone knows and judges best.

Peace and Love.

In Islam the only law applicable is that deriving directly from the Coran.
The Coran enumrates and states everything for a just and fair justice.
Shiates and Sunnites differ in the fact that Shia believe Ali cousin of Mohamed (PBUH) should have been the leader after the Prophet's death and his words and teaching should be the ones to be followed, along with the Prophets.
Sunnis believe no other teachings should be followed but Mohamed's and the Coran.
Shari'a is the muslim law, all factions included. Sunnis apply Shari'a.

COMMON CENT, this little history lesson is for you: JESUS WAS BORN AND CAME AS A PROPHET BEFORE ISLAM WAS EVER CREATED. ISLAM CAME TO COMPLETE WHAT WAS LEFT FOR THOSE WHO WERE STILL SINNING AFTER JESUS SPILLED HIS BLOOD FOR THEM.

I wonder...just how could there be 3 eyewitnesses to a sex crime? Isn't it a problem between 2? Shia Law has been used to crucify woman, while a man is free to perpetrate any action against woman he chooses. And this is fair to woman how?
Men's word is taken OVER woman's word. And this is fair?

Sharia, not Shia..... Type of law, type of Muslim...

Normally I wouldn't bother with this type of correction but the two terms are very closely linked and might confuse.

Just as Jesus said the religious leaders of His day only taught men's rules. So man defiles the teachings of the Quran!
Islam is no failure as I heard on your TBN the other night. It was needed to bring cohesion to a fearless desert peoples. But we live in the present. And the spirit must evolve.

MUSLIMS:

Christ died FOR your sins by shedding God's perfect blood as a sacrifice, a substitute for me and for you and for ALL. He willingly laid down his life and allowed himself to be crucified to a cross. Christ was numbered in with the transgressing theives as they were hung (crucified) on their crosses, and he on his.

Believe in his shed blood as a once and final payment for your sin debt unto God, and put NO trust nor faith in...

...your "good deeds", best efforts, occultic practices, deep thoughts, pastor's teachings nor preists' homily's, religion(s) or religious dogma, world or personal circumstances, communion wafers, water baptism, philosophy, lifestyle, education, evolution, your senses, church attendance, karma, religious attitudes, feelings, family traditions, supposed "holy or religious saving" laws or ordinances, self serving prayers, society, other people's opinions, etc.

Christ alone went in your place as your substitute to pay for the sins you've already done, the one's you're currently doing, and all that you'll do in the future. The only way to be made perfect is to be in Christ.

It's nothing experienced nor felt, but known by reading what the scriptures say in the bible, the word of God.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved! (Acts 16:31) God will judge you to be whole and sinless in his eyes, imputing Christ's righteousness unto you; Christ's faith unto you; and you in Christ.

Oh, and as for Shia Law? Any law is just something that stands behind you and points it's finger at you and states "YOU NEED TO DO THIS". Christ's true death for sin states; "I'VE ALREADY DONE IT." Sin is taken care of, in Christ.
