Absolutely. It's too hard to recycle them because usually the only way to do so is return them to the store. They are horrible for the environment. We should use recycled/recyclable paper bags or, better yet, reusable fabric bags (though it's difficult to convince everyone to keep them in their cars and reuse them).

In Ireland there is a 15c (think gone up to 20c) tax on each plastic bag sold, so all the shoppers, in less then a week of the tax coming out, bought reusable shopping bags for life, and we wouldn't be without them now. And clothes shops give paper bags with their names printed on them
Plastic bags takes 100s of years to decompose back into the environment, so if other counties don't bring something similar in there will be huge rubbish dumps full of plastic for the next 500 years, I wonder if tesco will be thrilled with the advertising!!!
One other note about the tax is Ireland has a population of 4m+ and the government made €8m from this tax alone, apartently single men on route somewhere to pick up one or two items are the ones who get caught out the most.

For sure! Where I come from plastic shopping bags have a 15c tax. The alternative is to buy large strong bags for $2. Obviously you don't go about throwing these out each time you go to a store. Has made a big difference to the amount of litter! I'm far from being a 'green freak' but I do prefer to live somewhere that's not full of litter.

Yes! First of all, they're bad for the environment, and second, they're annoying. They always rip in the bottom and I drop my eggs. But the grocery store doesn't even seem to offer paper bags anymore, and my mom likes the plastic bags because she uses them to pick up dog poop. I think there are so many other options, people just have to chose between the easy way and the responsible way. I'm sure if plastic bags suddenly dissappeared, people wouldn't grumble too much about switching to paper or fabric bags.

We have our own reusable bags. We do take some shopping bags to carry stuff home in when we are running low on previous ones, coz we use them to put in the bottom of our cat's litter tray. I suppose using news paper would be a better Idea. Thank you for your question I may alter the lining in her tray now to be more environmentally friendly. Ya know all it takes is to just think about it (sometimes).

I never ever never ever use plastic bags. I always have an extra bag in my bag, just in case I need to do a bit of shopping. I can't believe plastic bags here are free. Back home (DK) we have to pay for them.

They should charge for plastic bags. You wouldn't see that many if they did. I buy the life bags from Wilkinsons, only 50p. They are stronger than the other shop ones.

I didn't realise it was a major problem. Sometimes I get paper bags but for the most part most shops use plastic. I recycle but as for the plastic bags, they usually get thrown in with the rest of the rubbish.
