Older....and over weight.....a basic mini van might be best option. No getting down low to get in and out....very hard for anyone who is old let alone large.

A mini van or SUV they can almost slide directly in and out at foot level, lot less stress on the knees.

Vehicles with handles inside the interior at each door (sometimes called oh-chit handles) are also great items to use to get in and out as they are bolted directly to the structure of the car and can handle a lot of pulling on them.

My grandparents had a hard time getting in and out of all my cars and dad's cars. I then got a SUV and both stated how much nicer it was to get in and out of and wasn't so hard on their legs and knees.

You may not believe this, but try a VW Beetle. TONS of headroom, steering wheel will push out of the way, seat is height adjustable, and they are actually roomy in the front seat. Besides, the door opening is quite wide.

check for cars that have a higher wheel base so that your grandma doesn't have to bend as far down to get in. possibly a chevy malibu or something similar
