How can I ask a question af an average Indian, say for directions?

I experienced being told what the answerer thought I wanted to hear,
What occurred to them to be flattering to me
or what would make them look good
e.g. their pride of giving an answer when they didn't know or hadn't the feintest clue!

Your question doesnt make a lot of sense. How would you ask a question of an "average" person ? If you want to know something and you ask politely then you might expect to have a polite answer. People will go out of their way to help, even strangers.
But if you ask rudely or aggressively then you can only expect to get little respect.
