Brainwashing, also known as thought reform or re-education, is the application of persuasive techniques to change the beliefs or behavior of one or more people usually for political or religious purposes.

Studies have shown that infancy is the best time to start. It starts visually. This is because before children even form their first words and are able to understand language, they are forming and deciphering their first visual images. Brand recognition aims to exploit this by slipping as much branding into creche environments and on childrens TV as they can. The idea is to burn as much recognition for the brand, or in this case religion into the childs mind as possible from the earliest possible age.

If this is followed by a bombardment of religion specific programming up until the are aprox 18 then it's pretty much in the bag for life. This is because behaviours become pretty much hardwired between 16 and 18, this is more than just conditioning, this is the result of effective pro-longed manipulation of a mindset to the point where it becomes hardwired behaviour. This then becomes very hard to reverse, compared to an individual who has been raised in a moderate religious environment, and whose brain hardwires to accept other possibilities.

It's funny, but people who are devoted to a particular religion have no problem understanding and agreeing that persuasive techniques are employed by fringe cults to brainwash members into blind allegiance. But are blinded to the fact that they are the same techniques used by their own religion.

As a christian, I don't believe in brainwashing. That was best left to Hitler. God gives everyone a choice to believe in Him or not, choose His way or their own way. I have a daughter and I expressed my beliefs while she was growing up. But I always told her, "Don't take my word for it, though. Do your own research, seek out info for yourself. Read the bible and see if it makes sense." It did and she's a christian, too. But did I brainwash her?
No. She was, is, and always will be, able to make her own decisions. Everybody deserves that right. I may disagree with it, but others desserve the right to believe as they so choose.
Infidelus makes a wonderful point. Why can't we all stop hating each other and being angry at choices others make. The world will never come together or even be able to talk things out with so much hatred.

I am much more worried about the stories Obama tells.. no one is checking up on him.. the media loves him and gives him a pass at every turn. If his life and every word was studied and critiqued and torn apart every day like Hillary's is.. he would not look so good either. At least with Hillary we know what we re getting.. Obama.. it will be a big surprise and with all his racist buddies..we may not like what is coming.

Gee whiz, I don't know. I guess when they are 16 years old and in Jail (Juvenile Detention).

After they have doped up, or raped your sister, or shot up the school, or gotten pregnant. (or after they are on depression medication because you and Darwin told them they were insignicant, and that they were the result of heartless mutations in the evolutionary chain of events, and that love is an illusion, and that they would live and die and then turn into worm dirt for all eternity)

Then you could visit them in Jail or in the hospital, and;

Then you might bring out the 10 commandments or a few Jesus quotes:

Like: Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

or maybe something like;

"Forgive other for their mistakes. If you do not forgive others, then your father in Heaven will not forgive you.

Whoops! Too late, they have already found their own religion, and it is "self worship".

You are not guilty of "self worship" are you?

I could not have come up with a better definition of religion myself.
After all, children that were never brought up with any sort of religious brainwashing or indoctrination, are FAR more capable of telling reality from fantasy.
And they also know a load of BS when they hear about a magic sky-pixie too...

The dirt was scrubbed from my brain on a constant basis after birth, generally. In my family we were raised to have a relationship with the sky man, The LORD God Almighty, so our brains were never dirty. But for those who didn't meet Jesus at home, I ask, what's so wrong with some good old brainwashing?! I mean, you wash your clothes, your hair, your car and never take offense to THAT? Things that make me go "hmmmm." Hmmmmm.

Not a believer, but it starts very young. Right around preschool. Sunday school. Children's songs. "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world..." How many people know the words to this song, and how old were they when they learned it? How many were taught to pray before bed, that questionable little "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" thing? A child has no capacity to defend against this. It should be considered abuse.

As an atheist myself, this question saddens me on so many levels. Why can't people just get along without poking and insulting others? Why can't we just live and let live?

For those that follow the bible, there is a quote somewhere in there that says something to the effect of "Love thy neighbor, as you love yourself." Been a few years since I read it, so I may have got the quote a little wrong. Why can't we follow that type of thought process and love our neighbors despite their flaws?

If you don't follow the bible, I find the words of the great Bill S. Preston, Esq. to be particularly poignant. "Be excellent to each other."

So seriously, can we stop being so angry about religion, and just let everyone believe what they want?

Poor Frank. He's probably been in hell for 13+ years now and has eternity to continue to think about the grave mistake he made on earth rejecting Christ.I'm not judging , it just APPEARS that way. Only God knows the heart when one dies. If he happened to accept Christ on his deathbed, praise God!
I'll admit, he was a heck of a guitarist, but his idealogy was warped.
